Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971

I've just started this new kit. This time I choose the Martini Porsche from Le Mans 1971. This was Van Lennep first Le Mans win.

After seeing this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fJSJPId7eo on you-tube and bought this book...

...I decided to build the total spaceframe. So this will be a superdetailed version of the Fujimi Porsche 917K.

I ordered a lot of aftermarket stuff, including the fantstic engine from HRM. On this forum there is an other thread from SeanyG who build this engine kit also.

To get things started I made a platform to build the spaceframe on. I'm going to solder different brass-rods together. My mirror is the fantastic book and the Youtube video's from Gunnar Racing. Let's start....

I use the original mold from the kit as a guide. In this way I'm hoping that the body will still fit over the spaceframe.

For the frontscreen surround I used thin solderline. This was much easyer to work with. This will be more rigid after building the compleet cockpit.

Let's go up....

The left-side is done.

And right-side to.

My work so far.

I dryfitted the body on the frame. And you know..... it still fits

After painstaiking soldering I had to do something different. I decided to make the driverseat. I found some red cloth with much resemblance of the real seat. Before covering the seat with this cloth I had to made the correct shape. I used plastic strips to get the right shape.

The seat as it looks now.

More to come soon.

Eric

I agree with everyone else - good stuff! That chassis frame takes me back a few years - the Archive book is useful, isn't it? Looking forward to seeing more of this one.

Best regards,

SB

Very nice work. Love your frame. One word of caution, the Fujimi 917K cockpit is to wide. If you are going this far you should use the Heller/union body to base the framework on.

Another brass frame... Looks excellent and a lot tougher in that scale! I'm following this one! Where did you get your hands on the book? Have not seen it around anywhere yet...

Hi Garey

This excellent book is available in Europe but I did not find any retailers in the US. The best angle is to try Amazon because it is sold by Amazon Germany and Amazon UK . The book has 578 pages and comes cheap ..I paid 59 Euro The original factory drawings are included.

I see that you will use a rear tail from resin.
Tell, there is a possibility to expand rear fenders without changing for a resin tail? You thought of it?

Since what year have started to use wider blank-end cover? I that that have forgotten this moment...

Slightly wider as the season went on in 1971. By Watkins Glen they had extensions on the front wheels also. The 917 is was alot wider in the rear during 1970 also, although you would not know that by looking at the Fujimi kit wich is to wide in the front.

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971

I've made some progress again. First I had to rebuild the left and right side off the chassis. They were the wrong size en lenght. After rebuilding this I did much research to build the rear wich houses the engine and transmission. This is what I came up with...

It's time now to dryfit some main parts on the chassis to see if I'm still OK with fitment. The result was not to bad

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971

I have still a long road to go, but I'll get there. Now I have to figure out where all the little mountingpoints go on the chassis. The suspension will be scratchbuild also. Till then.
