Power sliding door cable adjustment

Hi, I have a 2000 Windstar, SEL with the power sliding doors. One of the doors will not always fully latch when it closes and will pop open partially. I compared the cables and noticed the problem side has a much looser cable than the other, which makes me assume that is the problem and the cable needs to be adjusted. I've read numerous posts about this problem with and repairs for it but no specifics on the cable adjustment. 12Ounce said he has done it, but I wanted to get the general idea what is done on what and how obvious the adjustment can be figured out and if there are any troublespots to getting the panel off and open. Can anyone share the TSB# 04-2-3 dated 02/09/04 that covers this? I'll have to investigate the other suggested repairs that were made in other posts, but I would have expected the cable to be taut if they were the problem. It has no problems opening the door and is otherwise completely functional. Thanks in advance.

Re: Power sliding door cable adjustment

Yeah, I've done it ... but it was long ago. The doors could now use some attention again, and I suspect this time some support rollers for the doors could use replacement. Adjusting the doors to the opening, and adjusting the cable drive probably should all be done together. If you remove the side door panels, don't overlook that single screw very low on the panel at the rear ... best to remove when door is slightly ajar. But if the doors fit the opening well, you can just deal with the drive.

I would recommend removing the back seat. Once you see the drive ... you will know how the cable adjustment is to be done. I don't remember the details, but remember it being fairly straight-forward.

Thanks to scubacat, the TSB is available here.

Unfortunately, it does not contain any information on the cable adjustment that I was hoping for. That must be in the service manual as the TSB is only a supplement to the SM.

Re: Power sliding door cable adjustment

12Ounce, does your SM cover any of what I'm doing? My Haynes is useless. Even the section for the rear HVAC doesn't get you inside that panel or provide enough useful pictures once in there. Not that any of that has kept me from going where it doesn't.

Re: Power sliding door cable adjustment

Thanks for covering that for me, Scubacat. It would have taken me some time to find my shop manual. How did you come up with the images? .... they look better than copies. Do you have the manual on digital files?

Yes. I probably shouldn't say HOW or WHY, but yes, I do have digital copies of all the manuals. I have the Ford set from 1996-2003 give or take a few models on either end.
