2001 Dodge Durango engine light on transmission not shifting right

I recently purchased this 2001 Durango at a used car place. I had a few hours to look around and buy a vehicle. We(wife and myself) were in a vehicle against deer accident, where both airbags on our Jeep inflated, and unfortunately, broke my wifes leg in 5 places. A Spiral break on her femur, 2 breaks on her tibia, 2 on her fibia. Anyway, I had to be quick and purchase a vehicle because after 4 days in the hospital, she was ready to go home. Ok, now just recently we were traveling to her folks house, maybe 40 miles away, the Durango started overheating, well we made it to the house and without shutting off the engine, I started to spray water into the front of the radiator. I got the engine cooled off with no problems, refilled the radiator, and before you know it, it was time to head back home. When I started the engine, the engine light came on, as it has before, I overlooked it and started down the street. I immediately noticed it was shifting funny. Well when we got to the highway, it really began to act up, not shifting right, or at all. I managed to hobble it home with some babying. But here I am now with this delima. Help if you can, cause I am over this lemon.
