Rear main oil seal - how far in?
There is more space in there than the oil seal is thick. So how far in do you tap the thing? 'Til it bottoms out? 'Til it's flush with the block?

flush with the block that should have been where the old one sat. make sure there is no groove worn into the crank where the seal rides

If you are talking about an o-ring, there is a special tool to install it....
