2003 chevy tahoe. loud grinding from front

other day girlfriend was driving and she said all of a sudden loud grinding noise from front end and the abs light popped on. she made it home, we called a mobile mechanic to take a quick look, when ever you put it in reverse noise is even louder and the rpm's go up. he says its a transmission problem and would prob cost around 2500 to fix. question i have i guess is, would the transmission going bad cause the abs light to go on? i was hoping it would be an easy fix like bad hub, brakes, rotor ect along that line. but not gonna replace that stuff if its actually transmission, ill just sell it off

the vehicle has 3 speed sensors. two on the front right /left wheel hubs , the other is in the transmission. if the transmission gear has failed and is causing a reading that is different from the front sensors you would get an abs light and transmission /moving issues.

if the transmission is slipping get a diagnostic check done. 2500 would be for a complete rebuild with torque converter rebuild. sun shell is most likely the problem as these are/were never properly heat treated. so they crack.

post back all the issues found . also the drive train failure codes
