1999 GMC truck slow turn over and no start

I have a 1999 Gmc Truck 1500 5.0 v8. Notice my truck starting heavy..like a low battery or something. This started getting worse over the week till the point where it cranks real slow. So i bought a new battery. Installed battery and still the same issue...slow crank like it wants to lock up. So i removed starter and notice some wear on the fly wheel so i replaced flywheel. Still the same thing! So this week i bought a new starter and guess what same issue. And im out of ideas on what is cause for a slow crank.

Surfer,

Start here for a general check thru your ignition system.

Here is the link http://www.accuratediesel.com/nostart.html

Also if you don't have an OBC-II you should purchase one immediately. You will thank me for sure.

Do you have "Service Engine" light after the vehicle is running? If so the OBC-II will give you the faults.

Your issue sounds like a MAP or CKPS fault.

how about some more details like how did this vehicle get a 5.0 L engine.

old or new body style ?

normal hard crank would be a bad starter drive / bushing worn. now it starts to bind and chew up the flywheel teeth.

replacing battery you should of load tested this first at most any battery suppliers. battery connections also may be corroded or the wire itself

Re: 1999 GMC truck slow turn over and no start

? How did it get a 5.0? Because thats what it has as an engine..lol. Its a 1999 GMC Truck C1500 1/2ton P/U 2WD 5.0L SFI 8cyl. So i bought another starter because the one i bought earlier today was heating up and smoking...i guess from me trying to crank it so much. I installed it and turn a little faster and turned on and ran. Left it running for 15min. turned it off...and again!!! Its doing the same thing...its acting like a real low bat. but bat is fine. I kept trying to turn it but still with a sluggish crank...I'm thinking maybe its a timing issue now...maybe timing chain is slipping?? Also no OBD codes i scaned it with an actron 60$ one

I would be testing for voltage drop to the starter. Bad cables?

Re: 1999 GMC truck slow turn over and no start

1st off, glad you cleared the 5.0 issue up with the previous poster and good job!! So, now on to your issue. I'm thinking about 3 things.

1. Batt Cables and connections. If you see any corrosion at all both should be replaced as the corrosion can get under the covering where it's not seen causing very high resistance.

2. Starter Relay? Maybe replace that.

3. One or more leaking injectors??

Re: 1999 GMC truck slow turn over and no start

Going to buy all wires that lead to starter...negative batt wire to block and positive wire to starter. On the starter relay...any idea where i can find that? Thanks.

could be after getting the engine to run on shutdown fuel or coolant is hydo locking the engine. remove plugs then crank see what cylinder blows out liquid

since the new starter got to smoke I would say the wires/battery/connections are good. with proper power to the starter only then can it get that hot.

when cranking 10 sec max then 2 min off. if you crank longer and or do not wait the full 2 min then you will need another starter as the windings get damaged[short] in the armature.

you have a rare GMC K1500 PU. only .8% of GMC trucks had this engine.

that would be engine code M in the VIN #.

since you placed this in the silverado forum as some have to get a better response, I thought this was the sierra model which does not use this old technology power plant.
