This noise is difficult to describe. It almost sounds like something that drags for a second and then engages or hits a stop and the noise stops. More of a clunk type noise. When I start the car and back up 10-20 ft or so it will do it. Shifting to drive and moving about the same distance will do it as well.
Its definately in front sounds like drivers side. At night when it does this it affects the headlights (momentary flicker). Engine runs fine, shifts fine too. I dont see anything obvious underneath. Front hubs have been replaced, car has 52k miles. Steering is fine. Somebody mentioned ABS solenoid cycling, another said solenoids in tranny. Sorry I cant describe it better, a very odd sound.

Re: 99 Regal Unusual noise
If it were the ABS solinoids, it would only do it when you first start the car, put it in gear and release the brakes and hit 3-5mph (somewhere around there). It would not repeat when you stopped and put the car in another gear and went the other direction. Only after key off then on again. Anyway you can post a video of the sound?

Re: 99 Regal Unusual noise
In regards to your post about the abs solinoids happening during startup when the car first reaches 3-5 mph. My car does that......what can I do to fix it? It is usually a bad hub/speed sensor?

Re: 99 Regal Unusual noise
That particular condition is normal, it is the ABS self test. If it particularly loud, you can check the insulators on the ABS unit and see if they are worn out. If they are you can replace them.

Re: 99 Regal Unusual noise
It's fine. I'm thinking it may be the ABS self test.
