New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

Well events had changed. I have been talking about getting rid of the mustang for a while now and I still am. I was going to shoot for a vette or even a friends Camaro. But now I am not too into a (loosly used term) sports car right now. I am going to get a new 07 model car and trade in. I have already driven the GTI and it was nice and pretty quick. I have driven the 06 Civic already in an auto 4 door and it was also a nice car. I am really looking for a 2 door manual EX model. My problem is that I like the quickness of the GTI and all but it costs more and I am honestly trying to get away from the performance car scene. I guess in my heart I am swaying toward the Civic being the nice car it is this year, but the GTI still is nice. I don't know I guess I am just looking for someone to bounce ideas off of.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

you're going to miss the torque of your vw if you get the civic. not saying the civic is a bad choice though. even though you say you're tryin to get away from the performance car scene, i think you'll miss the quickness of the gti and be disappointed in the civic ex. maybe not though have you considered the new si's?

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

If there is going to be a hot version of the new Civic in the States, then clearly hang out for it.
If not, then get the GTi.
I hate VW's, but if its the choice between a sports model VW, and an econobox Civic, then you have to take the VW.

Its possible to get out of the scene, and still be able to enjoy driving a sports car, especialy if its already pretty quick out of the box, and you don't need to do anything to it.

I went from owning a heavily modified car, to owning a car that I never modified, because I got something that was already very fast and a little special out of the factory.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

The new EX coupes actually have a stiffer suspension than the sedans do for 2006, so handling should be lots of fun. But the EX models for `06 don't have a different (more powerful) engine, the EX shares the same 140HP engine with the DX & LX. IMO, if you can afford the SI I'd definatley go with that, but if not, VeeDub is the way to go.

The Golf GTi, it's a very nicely complete car.

I can confirm that under the daring exterior, the new Euro-Civic is craptastic, I don't hold much hope for the flabbier American model.

That's only the start, far as I'm concerned, they took cloning the Peugeot 206 too far...

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

I think GTI's are cooler cars in general than any Civic. The deciding factor for me would be how long you plan on keeping the car. If you're going to get rid of the car while it still has some warranty left, I'd definitely get the VW. If you're going to drive the car until the wheels fall off I'd definitely get the Honda.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

As an owner of the MkV GTI that you are interested and after being in my sister's '06 Honda Civic LX and driving it...there's no contest in terms of what's more fun. The GTI still has lots of room for people and trunk space. And you can go fast just by dipping into boost. If you keep it under boost, you can get pretty good gas mileage. Plus, the VW interior is made of higher quality materials than the Civic is.

Cant lose on either, but the GTI is slightly better in terms of value and performance. Only thing is it's more money. But worth it.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

I guess I will miss the power of the mustang but honestly for what I use it for it costs more to maintain than I really need the car for. I don't drive the mustang much and thats really not good for a car. Last year I only put on about 2500 miles, I didn't even need emissions testing because of that. I love that GTI, but I find it hard to sell the car based on performance considering that I am trading in a more powerful car. Right now I don't think I can go wrong with either, they are both nicer in terms of interior and smoothness than my current car and either one would be bought new. I guess the Civic's strongest point to me is that it is an econo box, and its a nice one.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

Well, I'd say that you will miss having a powerful car after a while, but if you only put 2500 miles on it last year then I guess you won't. After thinking about this for awhile, I'd take the VW hands down. I really like hatchbacks, it's relatively practical aside from sticker price, and it's a pretty cool car in general. I actually forgot to compare sticker, there's probably quite a difference between these two.

Re: New Cars Civic EX or VW GTI

There is quite a difference between the two, the Civic Ex is 18400(I have seen it listed slightly higher but this is what the dealer gave me as an out the door price on the car I want) and the GTI is 23000 and that dosn't go much lower than that once you go to a dealer and check it out. Even the SI is cheaper than the GTI when it comes down to it.

Bought my GTI for around 20,800 OTD. Depends on what packages/transmissions you want. DSG is 1000 bux more. Package 1 and 2 up the price. I got 6mt Package 0. Anyways, I have heard of people spending 25k all the way up to 34k for a Civic Si. (No lie. I saw the sticker price).
