Senna's McLaren MP4/5B
Ran across this build in the shop a while back. I've always liked the "look" of the Marly McLarens, so I thought I'd build this one...
First thing I noticed was how bad the monocoque fits the shell. There's honestly not a lot you can do without some major reworking. I actually cracked the plastic the other night trying to narrow the shell a bit. ![]() If I had a dollar for every ejection pin mark, I'd be a happy man! ;D ![]() One thing I wanted to try to fix were the seams between the bottom and the sides of the monocoque. I've cut them off the base and glued them in place, then followed by a little Tamiya putty. The front suspension is coming together too. I didn't like the seams you could see there, so I've tried to seal those up too. Hopefully they turn out smooth. ![]() Couple more sink marks and ejection pin marks... ![]() And a mockup!! ;D ![]() Added stripes! ![]() Added BMF to the HONDA logos on the valve covers ![]() We have Marlin Borons!! ![]() Big happy family ![]() As I was putting the final touches on after decals, I tried to join the body to the monocoque. It didn't fit. The nose is curled up a bit. Maybe only 1/16", but I couldn't get the back to stay seated and the nose to stay down. I ended up cutting the nose off. Oops, I touched the gray sidepod with a little black paint on my glove! DAMMIT!! ![]() ![]() Big happy family AGAIN! ;D ![]() Mockup! ![]() Started the wiring last night... I should have that pretty much wrapped up tonight. Then just rivets and some stands for the body. I have a month left before ATL, and it seems like crunch time for a guy who builds as slow as I do! Re: Senna's McLaren MP4/5B
Hi! You cut the nose after you painted and decaled the body! That was a mistake! You have a nasty space now between the nose and the rest of the body! I work on the same kit and i cut the nose before i started to paint. I put some styrene on the nose to close the gap.
Otherwise you Mclaren looks great.

Re: Senna's McLaren MP4/5B
Thanks Captain Obvious!!
![]() I just couldn't get it to fit. I'm not sure if the paint or the dehydrator made it "curl" but I couldn't get the nose down at final assembly. It seemed to be fine during test fitting and I was definitely going to keep the body on... Oh well, I have more projects to work on! ![]() Erick -- |
