Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

well...being one of the most interesting italian rally car of every time, I decided to build one..or better to say, to build, (and make)..SEVERAL of theme.
The start was try found the Modeller's kit, out of production since some years, but at today one of the nicest delta s4 curbside ever done.

My purpose is to make some livery of this car, for this reason I didnt build the nice new model from profil 24 (even if I have it).The Modellers is perfect for curbside models, I want to place some delta together in a display.

I start look around in ebay, but the modeller original model always raised stellar prices, and I wanted not to pay so much for a kit quite old (always using as referring price the profil kit).I found then a clone done by a guy in Uk,replacing nearly all the modellers kit, without the PE parts

so, the kit is basically a modellers clone, with all its mistakes (wheels mostly). The price was ...nearly as a Modeller (more u wait ..more u pay,u know)but my idea is to use this model as a conversion chassis/body for 037 donor cars (almost all the smallest parts are nicer in hasegawa kit).

...and also design a good decal sheet to make nearly all the official cars racing in the 80's, so Martini, Totip jolly Club, and Olio Fiat grifone.

..let's work...

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

think this will be a long work/adventure.
First of all I wanna define my decal sheet with all the most important versions/numbers.
If I am not wrong at today nobody sold totip/grifone spare decals for the s4's
After this, I would like to make copies of the modellers body, and THEN test the decals over the cars.

The first livery will be martini racing and totip, I will make both the cars together, step by step.

I also have to fix the problem of the wheels. The correct ones are around, I am already on theme . This part cannot be done using 037 parts and all the models aroung are horrible in wheels.

Profil 24 has earth rims and slick tyres (so I will copy the peg 205 ti16 tamiya to correct the profil kit,Already done some copies.)

Modellers kit has fantasy rims.

It is also true u can choose to finish the models with wheels air vents, so it is possible to skip this problem

Thanks God, I was in contact with the greatest japanese modeller around, Ken Rally. He was too kindly selling me some spare rims of his conversion based upon 037.

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

here some pics of the 037 donor I would like to use (for the first model btw).

the draw of the decal sheet is done,a full a4 sheet with all liveries

the 037 was build nearly 6 yrs ago by a fellow I know.As u can see some small details as side mirrors, plastic opening on the side windows, almost all suspension, are better (cause in plastic) than metal modellers clones.

The rims from 037 cant be used cause s4 ones were different (even if it is possible to use s4 rims on the rear of the 037)

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

and here is my decal sheet, suitable (surely with minor adjustment) on all kits done by others, so profil 24,MRM, Modeller's, au43eme parallele..

In alps system the whites are never "full", and so i made more than 1x for the most important decals containings whites (as the esso for grifone version).
Surely the printing will cost some money (is a A4 format) but think it worth it.
With one sheet, u make 3 cars and u can choose with all the options (race numbers, pilots and road plates).More...there is also the basis to make an ECV prototype.....if maybe in the future someone will try to make one......

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

Wow it's group B time here on AF !!

Very interesting project...
I had the 43ème parallèle but sold it back for the Profil24 one.

The above Marlboro S4 is the spanish gravel rally champion.

Another trully impressive S4 is the "metal5" sponsored car driven by Bruno Saby in the 88 french rallycross championship (and maybe even Europe championship) that disputed the title to Fréquelin's 205 Turbo16.

If you want pics I have some.

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

Looks very cool. The best kit I found for this car was made by MKIV of Japan over 10 years ago. It is 1/24th scale. The Modelers kit is 1/26th scale(Im not kidding).

Enjoy your build.

of course.
I made a conversion/transkit for the 037 (u should take all the small gauges from hasegawa 037..mirrors, minor parts, the windshield, and so on.).
The transkit is simply a small essential part of the Modellers (yes..its a little small in appearnce, but looks great when done).I casted all the body curbside, the chassis (cause fw in this 3d u will see there is a difference in wheelbase between o37 and delta s4, even if small), the lateral air intakes, some extra front lights and the clear side windows, printed on clear acetate. All this at a very very affordable price....leaving all the missing parts to modeller skill. It is a very very artigianal transkit conversion, but if I am able to use it, u just can do it really better than me.

DO I forget something?...yes..I also made castings for the correct rims (so u can correct the profil24 kit with the real rims for slick tyres) and also made a very small cast serie of peg. ti16 tyres if someone (me at first for mine..) wanna use profil earth rims, with the correct tyre.
The tamiya tyre fits perfectly on the resin rims, just u should cut away the Michelin writing on it, cause Delta used Pirelli.

Just I ask sorry to all u guys, cause in this moment I have a new terrible drug-sickness in my venis.
Sailing.
It is real summertime in italy, and I am moving the first step into sail world....and I simply love it too much.
Saw serious sailships from Volvo ocean race...and fall in love,so for some weeks now I am here, learning as much as I can.

The deltas TK,the rims and my decal sheet are available. If someone interested plz maybe book it via PM.When i will be back (if I ever will be back ..) in ugly Milano I will send all.

@rallymaster...YES..if u can send me pics,merci.

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

the original lancia 037 windshield is a little bigger than delta one (probably cause all that part as an higher angulation, so it was bigger in reality). Will make a dime and cut it mostly in the upper part to fit well on the body.

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

and this was the rims/wheel situation at today.
The only ones in my hands were the ugly ones from modellers...and the donor 037 ones.
It would be possible to use anyway also the 037 wheels if u apply on theme the 4 blacks air vents, covering the entire wheel.Probably that was teh reason why modellers rims were not so accurate

and these are the correct rims, aven if thos resin color doesnt give the idea

the final look of the correct wheels is this.I used the pirelli writings from my decal sheet

to make some other livery for 037 the 2 rims (1 rear and 1 front in pic) are this :

Re: Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

so,now is time to recall my old friend casting manga and resin anime in the 90s.He is a real rocker....too nut guy.The cast are all home made, for me the quality is ok (do not expect a MFH guys.....we made all the cast together listening probably too much rock from 80s and drinking too much beer...)

working without a pump, it is obvious to find some air bubbles in nasty points, but is really nothing hard to correct with some plasticard and putty (I did it on front spoiler and on the wheel arch)
