Question Lemans P1 number panel lights

Can someone illuminate me as to how the car numbers on the sides of the P1 cars light up? Most seem as though they are lit from the inside or are they so reflective that they appear that way on TV?

Didn't see the race this year- but I want to say that race numbers are printed on electroluminescent sheets. They are turned on when it's dark, so they glow.

Re: Lemans P1 number panel lights

they are reflected decals, much like what Champion Racing did with the Audi R8 back in 2005.

they are using them now prolly for easier way to see which car it is (for fans and race control/teams)

Both of these answers are correct. Many teams are switching over to the electroluminescent numbers that light up when its dark. In prior years many teams had the reflective numbers like the Audi R8 in '05 as Spike mentioned.

I've always thought the light up numbers were a cool effect and would love to use something like this (http://www.microstru.com/Experimenter-Kits.html) to make it happen.

Cool stuff. I knew they were electronic because during pit stops they go off when the car's ignition is cut.
