New CD/Stereo Head in Old Car??
I am looking to put a new car (factory) Stereo in an Old Truck (1950's). I really like the look of an 05-06 Cobalt radio, but am open to anything Factory that will work. I have read and read about the unlock codes and how people bypass them, but will it even work in my situation? I have no computer in the truck, just plain DC wiring to run the truck. I want to use the new stereo for the look on the interior. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated, as I am going on countless hrs of study on this.
Thanks |

I have done many stereos in the past, but never swapped a factory one before with bypass codes. If you have the stereo on hand, see if you can rig a simple "power", "ground" and accessory from the stereo to a 12 volt source.

Re: New CD/Stereo Head in Old Car??
Yes it is 12V. I have a 50's chevrolet truck with a 327SBC (carb) on an S-10 chassis with a Ron Francis wiring kit installed. All accessories, lights, ....etc currently run off of 12V. I dont have the stereo on hand at the time. I have went to get it because I wasnt sure if it would even work. Didnt want to waste my time or $$'s if it doesnt work, although I am hoping it will.
Will it help any to search for the wiring diagram on the radio I intend to use? I know I will need the plug. Thanks Steve |

Re: New CD/Stereo Head in Old Car??
If I can power the unit and it comes on will I be OK? How does the unit get locked? I have heard that the previous owner of the radio has to set the player up to lock upon removal.
1. Ok, I am not sure I understand the Passcode. Looks like it needs to be hooked in the diag port. I dont have one? 2. I had read the forum topic on the 8th pin. I may be willing to try this as a last resort. Not sure of it though. Where can you find a wiring diagram / Schematics for GM Radios? Thanks, this may help me get headed in the right direction. |

Re: New CD/Stereo Head in Old Car??
What about a Non-RDS radio out of a 2000-04 Impala or cavalier. Will power on bench on 12V DC.

a wiring harness is designed to connect to the CAR'S wiring harness, not the stereos plug on the back. You would have to find a car in the junk yard with the radio you want and cut off the harness if you want to go this route. I thought you only had to put the code in if the constant 12V was interrupted.
