Clciking noise coming from engine...

I posted this under the Buick section also. But engine came out of a 2005 Impala, its 3800 series II with approx. 60,000 miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 98 LeSabre with a 3800 engine out of a 05 Implala with approx. 60,000 miles on it. Engine was installed on Nov. 11th, and I have driven the car approx. 1000 miles. The other day it starting making a clicking noise while I was out. I checking the oil & coolant both levels were fine. Engine idle is smooth, oil pressure stable and no service lights are on. The car sit in the parking lot for about 2 hrs. before I drove home. On the way home the car did not make any noise. However the next morning when I started to work it began making the same noise. Since that time the noise has not stopped. Engine still runs smooth, no loss of power, and starts easy. Clicking noise sounds like a lifter, but I have pulled both valve covers and all lifters appear fine. I also removed the belt trying to narrow down the area. Sound does not go away with belt off. I took a long handled screwdriver and listened to valves & fuel injectors, and both sound fine. Click sound speeds up with the RPM's of the engine. Sound appears to be coming from the raised up black area in between the valves. Not sure what is under there. However there is no vibration from this area.

I can do a lot of work on a car myself, but I am at a loss this time. If you have any ideal of what I should check please advise. I have let the car sit for almost a week afraid to drive it, don't want to mess anything up. So I really need to figure this out. I don't really want to take it into a mechanic if I don't have to. Since the engine failed approx. 1 week after I purchased it, I have already spent almost as much on repairs as what I paid for this car. I am tempted to drive the car, fill it up with high octane gas and pour some Lucus fuel treatment in it, but am doubtfull that will do anything. Thanks advance for any help you can offer. I already tried SeaFoam thru the brake booster, it made no difference what so ever.

Re: Clciking noise coming from engine...

your problem may be lifters have picked up some carbon.

the use of the engine after it sat for a time may have caused this.

even though the engine has about 1000 miles on the install changing the oil and filter would be a wise action to take.

use 5-30wt oil with a high quality oil filter [NO FRAMS] .WIX ,PUROLATOR PURE ONE are an excellant choice.

before replacing the oil use 5oz of marvel mystery oil to the engine oil. give it a few miles to clean the carbon from the lifters. check to oil color if it turns black this is the carbon...If this action improves or eliminates the engine noise replace oil as above , and install 5oz of the marvel oil to remove any remaining slidge carbon..

post back how this all worked out ..
