Car Goes Click, Click, Click
I'm trying to help a friend put together and get to run an 83' Toyota Celica GT with an automatic transmission. The problem that we are having is that we can't get it to turn over. All it wants to do is click at us. As far as we both can tell all cables and wiring harnesses are plugged in and there aren't any loose wires. We've had the alternator and starter checked and they both passed. Also there is a new battery with new terminals installed so that's not going to be the problem. In all of the reading that I've done I keep hearing about a neutral start switch. What is it? And where is it located? I believe I've found a spot where it should be but there isn't anything there. And we've put all of the parts in the car back where they go. Any and all help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. If possible pictures would be a bonus.

Re: Car Goes Click, Click, Click
When you turn the key, is it a single click or many in succession? Is it loud or soft? Is the sound coming from the dash or under the floor? The starter usually makes a single metallic click when it engages the flywheel, then the car turns over. Multiple clicks means that there isn't enough voltage available. A single click with no engine turning means the voltage is very low.
A neutral start switch, when activated, won't even allow the starter to attempt to start. It would be located near the shift lever underneath the plastic cover. How long has the engine sat? I would check to make sure the engine hasn't seized by putting a breaker bar on the crankshaft and turning it over. Then take off either the timing belt cover or the distributor cover and turn the crank to check that the camshaft is turning as well. It not, the timing belt is broken. Here's an example of what it should look like: http://www.allworldautomotive.com/fe...d=170567151179 Hope this helps!

Re: Car Goes Click, Click, Click
Is it getting fuel? No fuel means click click click cause the spark plugs have nothing to ignite.

Re: Car Goes Click, Click, Click
A starter which passes a bench test can still have bad solenoid contacts. This would give a click also. This is a common problem with toyota starters.
