I have a 2000 Escort with the 1.9L zx2 engine and 81,000 miles. I have replaced the Tie-rods, ball joints, inner bearings and seals, brakes and rotors.
When I drive it, it seems to make a growling sound from under the car (engine/tire level) and it gets louder as you drive it. This is not a little noise, you can't even hear the radio at 50mph. I have no idea what could be causing this. The car runs fine, drives fine, everything seems to be right but this noise. Any help would be great! |

High pitched ? May change over bumps ?
Check for torn CV Joint boots. |

I'd jack the front end up and spin the tires individually and see if you can hear where it's coming from.

Re: 2000 1.9L with weird sound.
Its fairly common for the rear tires on a FWD drive car to wear unevenly - because they have so little weight on them. If that has happened, you should be able to see (or feel) that the tread is worn in a wavy cupped manner on your rear tires. It wont be real dramatic, but if you look closely you would see it.
If your rear tire treads look perfect, then I think the noise would be something else. I have had lug nuts that worked loose after more than 100 miles, and treated me to a growling noise. Re-tightening the lug nuts stopped the noise, and the wheels were not damaged too much. They are still on the car 30,000 miles later with no ill effects. A hub nut that is not tight can result in noise too. If it is 'uneven tread-wear noise', the only real solution is to replace the tires. If you swap the tires to the front, the noise might be more noticeable, though eventually it might subside - after thousands more miles. To prevent that from happening again, rotate your tires front to rear about each 6000 to 8000 miles. |

Have the wheel bearings been checked or replaced? A dry bearing will cause a loud roaring.

Re: 2000 1.9L with weird sound.
Have the L and R side jacked up with the weight on the lower control arm. Grab the wheel at the side to side position and up and down position. Shake the wheel to find the cause of the looseness. Rotate the wheel to check the wheel bearing to for noise and roughness..

I think it's the problem with your tires.Your car tires must not be suitable for the road you are driving has this car been imported by some other state or country because the make of the tires depends on the weather conditions of particle areas. Just put some focus on your tires that of which make your tires .

Re: 2000 1.9L with weird sound.
Maybe brake heat shields are contacting the rotors? or maybe there is a tear in the front lower wind cowl; or maybe mud shield has come loose?

Re: 2000 1.9L with weird sound.
Sorry for the late reply... I ended up jacking it up, spinning both wheels... and disassembling the drivers side hub again. It was a bad bearing that we replaced with another defective bearing. Replaced that and its been find ever since.
