00 Silverado has no reverse all of a sudden?

Got in my truck last night and find no reverse Never had a problem with the tranny till now, checked the fluid and it looks and smells good although I'm sure if it were clutches it'd slip some before just going out completly. Computer's throwing no codes. Isn't there a reverse solonoid in the valve body? Could this be it? Any help would be highly appreciated.

on the driver side of tranny is the connector/switch check for damage corrosion. most likely the switch ....this has been reported with this issue .

since it works good in the other gears. work the shift lever and it may come back .

Well, unfortunatly I just took it for a drive and while it doesn't slip, it does rev till about 3k before it shifts into 2nd. I have no idea how this happened all of a sudden since it was fine early yesterday?

sounds like the SUN SHELL is defective. very common with these if you are not careful about using/maintaining these 4l60 trannys.

how many miles ? what fluid have you used ? how often do you replace the fluid and filter with pan removal ?

87k miles, only changed the fluid 1 time at around 30k. Dextron 3 but can't remember what brand.

since you have low mileage it is possible you may have a warrantee claim IF it is the sun shell . these are made with inferior metal . these crack then this sudden failure.

some have had this work performed for about 800.oo to just replace this part with a higher grade stronger sun shell. dealership has been reported to use the defective one..

do some internet work and read the many owners that suffered from this , and how they got it resolved.

post back with your findings of what is wrong with this tranny..

I'M JUST GUESSING . NEED TO OPEN IT UP AND INSPECT.

In the future do not use any dexronIII. this fluid is no longer licensed by GM because it is a defective fluid and has caused many tranny failures.

The new GM fluid is dexron VI...this all came down in 2006.

I stopped using dexron III back in 1998. all vehicles have mobil synthetic tranny fluid.

You're not actually shifting into 2nd. When you are reving it up and it is shifting late, its actually shifting from 1st, skipping 2nd and hitting 3rd. This is classic sun shell symptoms. The sun shell is broken at the collar where the sun gear is. You need an overhaul.

Found a local trans shop that'll r&r the trans, replace the shell with a "Beast" unit, check everything else and service the transfer case for 1400 bucks. Does this sound like a good price?

Its actually a little too cheap. That would worry me a bit that they might be shortcutting. Are they rebuilding the transmission or are they just going into it as far as the shell?? If they are rebuilding then Its not bad, but for that price, make sure they upgrade the 3-4 clutches, this is a weak link in these transmissions.

since this has low mileage replacing this sun shell then looking over the valves for wear ,this should also have a warrantee.

these tranny parts are cheap. so you should have a written agreement that allows for other parts to be replaced if required with your approval.

then with all this warrantee in writing.

1400.00 is a little high . still much less than the dealership, also you have a stronger sun shell.

many believe these crack due to heat and not fully stopping the vehicle when placing tranny in gear [fwd/rev] !

This was for only replacing the shell, my dad knows the owner who he talked to about it and was told since it didn't have alot of miles on it and was not beaten on, it should be ok to just replace the shell although he did say they'd inspect it while it was out and let me know of anything else they may find before replacing anything else.

this all sounds good to me .

This transmission has weak areas from the factory that need to be addressed. $1400 is a little high to just go in as far as the shell and do nothing else. You'll be back in it before long.

But its your money. Good luck with it.

I agree, I kinda had second thoughts about this and will hold off and try and find a deal on either a heavy duty rebuild or buy one and install it myself.

If you wait , this vehicle must not be driven. doing so you will destroy the tranny and then you will be into big money.

get info on rebuilders in your area and have it inspected and then replace whats needed. many have gone over 200,ooomi with this vintage vehicle with no problems. since you have not abused this vehicle the inspection should reveal not much that is worn.

many have replaced their transmissions from companies that claim to install super duty every thing . then the tranny fails .too many have been scamed. have a local tranny shop repair it . these are not difficult to repair and shops know all about these issues.

keep your transmission not some other tranny of unknown condition.

then the other option is to replace your old with a new never used tranny.
