2003 6.6 Duramax- Turbo Issue?

2003 Chevy C3 Stake Truck- 233,000 miles

LB7 Duramax engine

Hello all, the truck in question is a work truck, not mine, so I have occasional access to it. I have no experience with turbos, much less turbodiesels, but here's the thing--

When driving, around 2,000 revs and higher, I hear a "rushing air" sound that rises and falls with engine revs. I'm sure this is the turbo, but I don't feel any extra power kicking in, not even after lag-time. It feels (and sounds) like all the turbined air is escaping, wasted.

The truck and engine otherwise seem fine (although I am told it has an injector issue that is not getting fixed anytime soon).

What do you think?

Is this sound new, or has it always been there?
It may be a plugged exhaust, or a bad turbo bearing.

I have only been driving this truck for less than a month. The guy who normally drove it (past ~3 years) assumed the current sound and power was normal. Whatever went wrong probably happened before he started driving it, because another co-worker clearly remembers the turbo "kicking in" could be felt while driving.

I know on the variable vane turbos the impellers carbon up and sieze so you have to take the turbo apart and clean it up. Im not sure when they started putting them in but I would check for that. Also if it is not a variable vane check to see if the waste gate is binding.

I think they started the variable vanes in 2004, with the LLY engine. Where is the wastegate, what does it look like, and how do I check it?

On top of the engine, passenger side, I see some kind of diaphragm with a rod sticking out, which connects to a lever in the engine.
Is this the wastegate? ...the diaphragm, or whatever the linkage moves inside the engine?
I asked a coworker to rev the engine in park while I watched, but the linkage never moved at all- was it supposed to?

If it has a injector problem you will need to fix that first thing.
The turbo will not work right if engine is not running right.
Does it have any stored codes or check engine lights?
What is the injector problem?

I will try to get that information.
From what I've gathered so far, the injector issue seems to be a common problem, probably the injector recall issued to LB7's. However, I'm afraid this truck is past warranty, and a ($2-4K?) fix just isn't going to happen very soon.
The check engine light IS on. Maybe I'll get a chance to run to an Autozone or something and get the codes- or can I pull them with a paperclip jumper?

Auto zone may be able to get OBD11 codes but a engine capable scanner is the best way to check it out.
Any check engine lights on?
Post back any codes you get.

I had to take the truck home last night, so I took the opportunity to run over to Autozone and pull codes.
One code came up, p0802. It has something to do with the transmission; I don't think it's related.

OBD11 code?
What transmission and which truck ?

The code was pulled from the port under the dash on the driverside.
I'm not sure what transmission it has exactly; it's an automatic for sure. The truck is a 2003 Silverado 3500 stake truck, 6.6L LB7 Duramax diesel.

Code 802 is a transmission electrical control problem.
But that AZ obd11 code read out does not do much as far a testing or checking out your problem.
It needs to be put on a engine transmission capable scanner to get transmission and engine running problems.
Which can check out injector and turbo operation.
You can not tell much by just looking at wast gate rod/lever.
What was the info/history on the injector problem in first post?
