Question Speedometer not working

A friend has a 98 eclispe. The VSS sensor came apart had a heck of a time getting the lower gear out of the transfer case (Manual Tranny). Put a new sensor in still no speedometer. When placed new one in vehicle it dropped right I would have expected the gear on bottom would need to be turned to match it to what ever gear drives the VSS gear. Does anybody have a diagram of how the VSS is driven by what ever gear inside the transfer case. I am putting it up on a rack tomorrow with a volt meter attached to confirm if there is a signal coming from the VSS.

Thanks
