Buying a car on concept only?
Hi guys,
I'm doing some research into purchasing habits for prestige / high performance vehicles. Does anybody know of any cases where these type of cars have pre-sold before production. I.e. Bought on manufacturer concepts rather than from a showroom or dealership? I have found a few cases, but only seem to be in the very very exclusive low volume areas of the market where production costs are so high they need to secure customer interest first. Many thanks in advance, Richard. |

Re: Buying a car on concept only?
Tucker and Delorean come to mind. Both companies were trying to establish themselves as manufacturers of mass-produced high volume cars, with a goal of making many thousands each year.
Both companies (especially Tucker) depended in part, on taking deposits on dealership franchises and actual cars, before the cars were fully developed and in production. Another example? Volkswagen. The original Beetle was a utopian propeganda tool conceived by Hitler and the Nazis. They envisioned an inexpensive car, affordable by everyone, and sold shares to many ordinary Germans with the promise that each investor would soon receive a car. |
