Question 99 sonoma fuel gauge

The gauge on my sonoma keeps going back and forth from full to empty never anything inbetween and does it all the time. Would this be a gauge problem or sending unit?

thanks

Re: 99 sonoma fuel gauge

Most likely the level sender, in the tank, attached to the fuel pump module but can be serviced separately. Very common problem when the fuel pump module is replaced with an aftermarket part.

yep, very common. my gaguge hasnt worked properly in 4 years. As a general rule. i fill the tank to full, reset the trip meter, and then refill again at 200 miles.

Re: 99 sonoma fuel gauge

I was told that a lot of these sending unit issues are a result of sulphur residue on the contacts on the fuel pump module. I was told that repeated doses of fuel system cleaner might help but I have never tried it.

Any Comments?
