01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

I have a friend that called me yesterday and said his tahoe wouldn't start. He ran up he street and came home to take a shower and get ready for work. When he went to leave to go to work he got in it and turned the key to the on position not running and forgot something in the house got back out and went back in the house to get something. When he came back out a minute or two later turned the key back off and tryed to start it and nothing just cranked. When he called he said the security light was flashing with the key in the on position. I figured he had the passlock on. So I told him to leave the key in the on position for 10 minutes and then try to start it. He tryed that and said the security light is not on know but still just cranks. I am going to take my trailer over there tonight to look and see if I can get it started otherwise tow it to my house. Any ideas what to try.

On some the reset procedure is key on 10 minutes until light goes out. the key off and on 10 minutes until light goes out 2 more times then key off and on and light should go out then it should start.
The 3 times on 10 minutes will run battery down so have a jumper or charger on it.
Let that know how it goes.

Okay I will try that for sure when I get there tonight but on the third time do I turn the key back off from the on position then try to start or just roll it straight to start.

Re: 01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

Okay I did that and still will not start. When you turn the key on know it doesn't flash security know. I tried to hook my scanner up to it and see if it said anything and it will not connect keep getting failure to connect. So I loaded it on my trailer and stoped at advance and had them come out and try to scan it same problem their scanner would not do it just keep saying error. I sprayed some starting fluid in the air intake and it started for a second. So I know it is just a fuel issue but I can not here the pump run. But being I can't get into the computer worries me that it is something else like bad computer.

Scanner not working is usually bad fuse to pin 16 on diagnostic connector check pin 16 for 12 volts.

Re: 01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

I just checked I have power at that pin which on my scanner cables it has a light to say it has power. When I have ran into that on my 05 silverado not reading the power light did not work and I actually blew the fuse which is the same as my power point fuse. When I turn the key on the security light does not come on anymore. But I am not sure if the fuel pump went out or if the computer is bad or something else even not sure how to narrw it down to pin point the problem.

Security light should come on key on and then go out if working right.

Check for spark to plugs engine cranking.

If fuel pump does not power up key on 2 second prime up.

Jumper fuel pump and see if it runs and has proper pressure.

Also check all fuses and power feeds.

Re: 01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

I know I have spark it will start with starting fluid

Fuel pump does not prime up when turn key on.

Is there wright up on jumping the fuel pump or were the plug is even at to send power to.

I was looking to see if I saw a fuse or relay anywere for the fuel pump under the hood or on the side of the dash and never found one to check.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 15MIN. then check for start.

using a volt meter/ohm meter check all fuses . locate the fuel pump fuse then see if voltage at this fuse for 2 sec when key first turned to run.

the cover of the fuse box has these locations as well as the relays.

The gray wire from fuel pump relay powers fuel pump.

Okay I have the battery unhooked I will try to hook it back up and see what happens. I also will have to locate the fuel pump relay and can you get to the wires on the back side to send 12v to it to see if it runs.

Re: 01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

Okay I looked at the relay and I can not get to the back of it to see which wire is the gray one. It is all closed in the fuse case from the bottom. Can I pull the relay and just send 12 volts to one of the terminals with out the relay in and see if the pump runs. I am not sure which number on the relay is the terminal that is the gray wire. I did not see a fuse anywere only the relay is that all there is.

Okay I just went back out and started checking fuses the ecm b fuse was blown I put another 20 in and when I turn the key on it blows. If I pull the fuel pump relay and put another fuse in the ecm b and turn the key on it doesn't blow. Were to go from here.

Re: 01 tahoe wont start maybe passlock

EMC B fuse powers relay.
Your relay or fuel pump is shorted.
Try another good relay.
Pin no 87 on fuel pump relay goes to gray fuel pump.
Jumper gray wire with a 20 amp fuse jumper and see if it blows or runs fuel pump.
Might be wise to run a amp draw test on fuel pump.

You can find the gray fuel pump feed wire on the plug in at fuel tank or split relay box and get on the under side of it.
