Re: 94 Safari 4.3 W AWD running bad
I had a similar issue on a 97, start by checking your advance on the distributor, if it does not advance your timing when you accelerate you will get a similar issue, if that is good pull your distributor and check if the bushings are worn. If you are not sure how to pull the distributor - take off the cap, mark on the engine where the rotor is pointing and also mark the body of the distibutor at the same place, pull off the 9/16 bolt that holds the distributor lock on the side and gently turn the rotor counter clockwise while pull up on the distributor. Make sure nothing falls in the hole. Now grab the main body of the distributor with one hand and the gear at the bottom with the other and wiggle from side to side, if you get movement then your bushings are worn. I found a replacement for mine at NAPA for $157 for a rebuilt and had no issues from there. To replace the distributor simply realign the marks, make sure not to crank over the engine or you will need to start from scratch - not fun on an astro. Also make sure your oil pump shaft is lined up. If the distributor does not go in easily do not force it, you are probably off by 1 tooth, just turn the gear 1 tooth and try again, should slide in easily. It is a good idea to recheck your timing with a timing light when done.
