towing harness

Hope I am in the right place here. I am asking these questions for a friend. He has a chevy express conversion van. He (we) are needing to know about hooking up a towing (wiring) harness on this van. Does he just need to pick up a wiring harness and plug it in or what?

Thanks

Re: towing harness

Aftermarket harness connector MIGHT have identical color coding. If not, you'll need a multimeter to see which lead gets power for each turn signal, which for brakes, etc.

Do you have a pic of the factory pigtail?

You will need the right plug in for the trailer.
4 -5 and 7 wire plugs are common used.
And some trailers use the electric brakes that need wired up also.

Some just splice in and they make some with plug in plug and go wiring to vehicle which is best.

On the splice in ones you will need to find the right wires to splice in and also splices need sealed so moisture will not enter connection.

Best to find a parts place that has trailer stuff.

Re: towing harness

I had same problem.... Had dealer show me pin outs on the fuse box. My express had wiring harness for electric brake under dash but no trailer wires to the back of the vechile and I was to;d that option was not available after it left the factory. Mine was new and I said that i wanted to see thte wiring diagrams or they would be getting the vechile returned, because they knew it ws bought for that and had the trailer hitch, but no wiring harness.

Caution canoot ues the Aftermarket on that hooks to the tail lights, because the voltage is computer controlled and varies the power to the lights depending upon the function.... ie turn signal and stop light are the same bulb
