yes it was over heating,it would shut the moter down when it got hot,the gauge was almost in the red. i changed the temp sensor back about 7 months ago fans still did not work, i drove it every since it would do fine unless you got stuck in traffic then it would overheat, now two days ago i tryed something i read on hear i unpluged the temp sensor below the thermostat start the car and the fans come on and the check engine light. now the next ? bad sensor? i bought the old one new but it never worked, also will this harm the moter with the fans running all the time? ill replace the sensor soon and try again its only 11 dollars, also would this make the torque converter lockout get hot and start acting up, cause when you drive it and it gets hot the car shuts down in drive, but in park it runs just fine,so i unpluged the torque converter lockout from tranny, now it runs fine no shutdowns but it seem ive lost the overdrive gear in the tranny??? i also bleed the air out of the thermostat housing.thanks any help would be great!!!!!

I have the same trouble. Fans will only operate when the ECT disconnected. Any fix for this?

Re: 93 grand prix radiator fans not coming on

Not sure if you solved your problem yet or not but I had the same issue on a 94 cutlass 3.1. Relays were fine, fuses were fine, fans worked fine when 12v were put directly to them and also when the coolant temp sensor was unplugged. Never did figure out what exactly was wrong but I just wired the fans into an item that only gets power when the ignition is on. Ie fuel pump or other similar. Now the fans always come on when the key is in the on position. BTW when you say you lost your overdrive after unplugging the torque converter that is normal operation. You're torque converter will no longer "lock" and drop the rpms a couple hundred.
