I have a 92 charokee laredo. The previous owner broke the key off in the key lock cylinder. Does anyone know how to remove the Key lock cylinder from the steering collum so we can remove the broken key? Thanks!

I've read that on the bottom half plastic piece on the steering column right behind the steering wheel, there's a hole located directly underneath the lock cylinder. You take a punch or narrow screwdriver and push up into this hole, then pull out the lock cylinder. Hopefully, this applies to your model. Let me know what you find out.

But..if I were you...i would try and pull it out with a thin long nose plier...after shooting some WD40 in there. |

Thanks for your suggestions. My Fords all had the hole in the steering collum to remove the key lock. Replaced two of them that way. The Cherokee is solid. I can't find a hole anywhere. I tried the WD40 but I couldnt see the key in the lock. It used to bind when you went to start the car but now it starts beautifully. It will make it easier to steal, ha ha. I hate to call a locksmith, but.... Right now its not that important but when my son wants to drive it to school...

you could try putting a dab of superglue on the end of a paperclip and holding it to the piece of broken key stuck in the lock then when it dries really good then you could pull it out or if it is to far down then the process is pretty simple to remove the ignition lock you will need a steering wheel pulller and a and a faceplate removal tool both of these tools can be bought at any parts store...... let me know if the glue trick works first if not i will tell you how to remove the lock with the tools |

WOW! What an incredibly simple idea. I never would have thought about using super glue. I went out to try but the problem I am having now is that the key hole is not lining up. I live in the desert and it is really hot out there right now, not to mention humid because of thunderstorms. I will go out and try again tonight or tomarrow morn. Thanks for the idea. Will let you know how it turns out.

Hey there i was a locksmith for a few years and i used that trick many times as for your current issue with the lock not lining up try using a small flat head screw driver and try lining it up by sticking it in the lock ( not all the way) just enough to turn the lock so that it will line up, hopefully the glue trick will work for you |

Thanks for the screwdriver idea. I was going to use the key but a screwdriver is a better idea. Wish me luck...

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to y'all about the key. Between Kids, Vacation, parents, out of state guest, and the start of school I have been very busy.
I finally found the time to go out and work on the jeep. I was able to line up the cylinder and see the key. I glued the paperclip onto the key and made sure I waited to let the glue dry before I pulled it out. It would have worked beautifully except for the fact that when the key broke it bent so that part of the key is behind and will not line up with the cylinder. Sooooooooooooo.................In my frustration I was talking to my brother-in-law and he says "I have everything you need to pull the lock." Turns out he is a big jeep guy (who knew?). Well, actually, I knew but had forgotten since he sold all his jeeps 15 years ago to spend more time with his family. He is going to come out and pull the keylock for me. THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS!!!!!! They were all great and Im sure will help me in the future if I am ever dealing with a broken key situation. Shimi |
