any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

My buddy has an 05 Aveo as a Daily driver he also has a soon to be LS1 swapped Nissan 240SX. But we go to the local car hangout on the weekends (30ish min away) and since both are project cars are down we take his car Sooooooo anyway we meet up with the guys from the local car site and they always wanna race the aveo with there Daily cars, so this Neon wants a race willing to give him 4 and the bust. Neon has header intake, exhaust, cams, other bolt ons and Nitrous (he will be on motor) then are buddy who has a 9 second LS1 Camaro wants some with his Daily S10 (V6) so i wanna see what his aveo can do. so what can we do for cheap to make the car a little faster?

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

well a trip to an exhaust shop and get a peice of exhaust pipe to fit in to the stock intake tube (here are pics to show what i mean http://www.msnusers.com/aveopics/sho...nw?albumlist=2) and a hi-flow filter makes a quick and easy cold air intake and it only costs about 50$. you can get mufflers pretty cheap at pepboys for like 60-70$. also NGK iridium spark plugs help a bit. if you got a bit extra cash after that some good rubbers help your acceleration alot too. also i aint familiar with the car show language so please explain to me what "4 and the bust" means.

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

well, he is going to get the CAI made tomarrow or friday i believe. he wants the exhaust to be stock, so it doesn't sound like every other ricer on the street we are planning on taking out any extra weight for hte night too(backseat,spare,ect...) Oh, and i'm borrowing my buddies Civic rims and tires that have Drag Radials on them to help yeah i know retarded but funny.

4 and the bust well that means he is giving him 4 car length head start in a race (also known as a spot) then the Hit/bust/leave is known for when the flag/light drops the guy who gets the hit can leave anytime after then the other guy has to give chase. only way an aveo can win lol

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

well i have a feelin the neon will still pass especially if its on spray. how far you goin 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile? hows he doin up the cold air? as for the s10 i think you got a chance. i think that because i race a v6 dodge avenger and beat it with my aveo, not by alot but none the less he was beat. and that was when i only had the modified intake. so thats why i beleive you can beat the s10 but i like i said before the neon is gonna take the aveo. let us know how it goes down. i also heard that synthetic 5w 30 is supposed to be good for this motor as well. just a thought....

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

Lol, I'm dropping by the forums for the same reason this thread was created (lookin' extra hp for roommate's Aveo).
I just wanted to chime in on the last thing...

I've driven/raced lots of slow cars while my project cars were on the stands.

When my Stealth was on stands- VW Jetta(borrowed), Eclipse RS (owned)
When the Talon was down(still is)- BMW 318TI (just bought, just sold)

And now the Original Talon is still on stands (blew 2nd trans, within 25ft of installing it), I now have another Talon... lol, it's a sickness...

I wish you GL...

my roommate's Aveo is pretty peppy to be what it is.
He cut the springs, Added an intake, and has a racing tip (not full muffler) on his car. The muffler doesn't sound like rice though, it sounds pretty good (Am I admitting that out loud?)

Edit: Turbo plans in the making...

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

i heard cutting the springs are bad. like it can fuck up your supension bad and that it doesnt add any performance at all. i dunno tho cus some are all for it and some are all against it. i at one point thought about spring clamps but they sound too risky. sorry to hear about your talon tho. that shits gotta be frustrating.

Ok, when you lower any car (whether buying lowering springs, or cutting the OEM ones) you have to adjust the camber and get an alignment, as all the geometry will be different.

The only way I see cutting springs being able to mess up the suspension is when you cut too much off the coils. This would effectively let the shocks/struts bottom out when going over big bumps/holes. Over time the repeated bottoming out could damage the shock/strut. You can buy shocks/struts that are smaller or made for lowering springs, this will correct this situation.

Now, spring clamps. Those are really dangerous. Take this scenario: You have lowered your car by 1.5" in the front 1.25" in the back. Now, you're cruising along, going a pretty good speed, and you come into a curve. You properly actuate the throttle for the weight transfer through the corner, and now there's a large pothole on the driver's side (in a curve to the left).
Your driver's side tire now lands in this hole, making the suspension travel outwards, as your tire proceeds out of the hole, the suspension travels back upwards. When the suspension travels back upwards the spring now compresses, so much that the clamp no longer has tension on the spring. This makes the clamps fall off of the spring, therefore returning the driver's side suspension to stock height. All while in a curve, now the driver's side is sitting higher than the rest of the car, this makes the car pull to the right, and you wake up in a ditch.

Spring clamps FTL....

The best way to lower a car is to do it right(Tein, lowering springs, whatever method you choose)... but when you're strapped for cash, cutting the springs isn't that bad an idea.... but get an alignment

I had my Talon lowered by cutting the springs BTW (the Black FWD, 300+hp)

Re: any extra avail. horsepower for cheap?

Why dis on the s10? depending on the year and if is a 5 speed or auto or single cab or Ext cab. but dont think a s10 wont stright up go, i have a 94 s10 4x4 ext and i beat neons, F-150s, 1500s, and hondas all day long, one because i launch out of 4wd and two because power to wight ratio
