question about brakes....

I was wondering what would cause a vibration when braking at about 55+ miles and hour? I was thinking warped rotors so would that be it or something else having to do with abs system? abs and trac off light is on at start up. so with that in mine I bought some slotted drilled rotors for front and need to still get some new pads..with that my other question should i go with a ceramic or semi metallic pads.

Thanks for all your input

Re: question about brakes....

If you only feel the vibration during braking it is probably warped rotors. The ABS light is supposed to come on during start-up and should go off shortly after you start the car. The new rotors should solve the problem but you may want to have the tires balanced.

As for the brake pads the ceramics are good and don't create dust but the semi-metallics will also go a good job. Just purchase premium pads.

Altough I'm not an expert I agree with GTP Dad, ou might have a problem with warped rotors, also if you feel your steering wheel vibrates too you should check the side rods on the steering rack, I had a problem with one of those and the result was a vibration on the car and the steering wheel while braking.

Re: question about brakes....

as far as the abs/ trac off light it comes on and stays on... as far as pads I heard ceramics would retain heat and semi metallics help dissipate heat better so if that is true would a high performance semi met. pad be better?

Re: question about brakes....

Both lights on mean you definitely have an ABS problem, maybe a wheel hub bearing is going bad or has gone bad already, maybe one of the sensors is disconnected you should check the blue connectors near every wheel to make sure they are OK. Finally it would be easier to find out what your problem is if you have access to an ABS capable scanner. I'm sorry but this is as far as my knowledge can help, I hope I'm being helpful.

Are you sure about that Lynn? You do get brake dust from ceramic pads just not as much as the semi-metallics.

One issue I've had with hp type ceramic pads is squeaking until they fully brake in which could be up to 1500 miles or more.

IMO "Performance Friction Carbon Metallic" pads are the best around if you are not concerned with brake dust.

Re: question about brakes....

You are correct Bob ceramics do create dust although the semi metallics produce a whole lot more and the ceramic dust doesn't seem to crud up your wheels as much either. The ceramics seem to wear longer too.
