Cool Ferrari 612 Scaglietti...nice model, lousy kit!

This was a labor of love...but I hated this kit with a passion. I had almost forgotten how bad it was from the first one I built several years back. Veyron recently was hating on the kit as well after wrestling his to completion.

The body was rough and needed more cleanup than usual to get it ready for paint (and the later US version of the kit is even worse; sink marks are amazingly huge and numerous). Major parts in final assembly do not fit without a lot of work (side glass is warped and tabs inside body to locate it are incorrectly positioned, hood hinges, door panels interfere w/side glass, rear of chassis, taillights, headlight covers...).

The upside is it came out pretty nice. Kudos to Scale Production for doing the 20" Challenge wheels, they are superb and required very little cleanup work, and not much modification to fit the Revell suspension. I snagged the tires from an F430 Challenge kit for the wheels, I can find better rubber for that kit later, and they suit the 612 better than the race car. I modified the front fascia along the lines of the 599GTO; bigger side grilles, mesh pattern grilles.

My Crazy Modeler chrome transfer emblems aren't much good; in the few years I've had the set, the adhesive has degraded and they aren't much good. Too much adhesive on the clear transfer, not enough on the part.

If you really, really want a model of the 612, go for it. If you aren't that big a fan, you're better off passing on this one. It's a terrible kit. I'm hoping the upcoming 458 Italia is much better executed.

Nice job! While the kit does require a lot cleanup and some minor corrections, I didn't find it hard to build. The only thing that really bothered me was the hood and chassis warpage.

Thanks!

Funny thing is, this is my second 612, first one I used a Viper hood, and both hoods (from first production run) were totally unwarped. Seems like my kits were an anomaly.

The chassis didn't seem warped on mine until I got to final assembly; there's an issue w/assembly that makes the rear end hard to attach to the rear bumper, and gaps at the rocker panel areas. Just very vague engineering.

I didn't have any real issues w/the engine or interior, until final assembly where the door panels wouldn't go around the (warped) side glass at the bottom. I had to bevel the outer/upper edges of the door panels to get the unit in place.

Sometime during final assembly the hood hinge retainer slipped...I couldn't take it apart, the hood wouldn't close, so I had to cut the hinges.

Re: Ferrari 612 Scaglietti...nice model, lousy kit!

Thanks for the heads up bob, i planned on getting this kit. But now i don't think i will, instead ill spend my money on the 345. Yours came out super clean like your other builds. The sp wheels look great on it. Still need to get a pair of those too. Hopefully i could get back to some modeling soon, as seeing everyones builds gets me anxious and motivated. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome build of Ferraris MPV (people mover), the wheels look great & fill the arches better than the stock.

Nice build and painting, black roof looks real.
I know very well how hard and indecent is this poor Revell kit. I finished mine some time ago with same BBS rims

Looks superb, a super clean finish and convincing panel lines on a white car! From the pictures you would never know all of the problems you have had with what sounds like a terrible kit!

Wow, it turned out very nice and super clean! I also built 2 of these kits, one was unwarped, but had to fight with the other one. So knowing the quality of the kit your work grows even bigger and bigger, congrats!

I wouldn't be under those black roof on Italian summer... I suppose would be better feel warm inside a Scaglietti than on a Fiat Panda... yes should be OK.

I must say that white is today a great option almost for all, with its racing echoes fit well even the luxy 612.

Fantastic neat build like expected from you.
