Typical problems/issues?

New to this forum. I'm looking at a 1997 Silhouette for my wife's business. It won't be doing any heavy hauling or towing. Are there typical issues/probelms I should be looking for or to ensure they have been taken care of? Thanks!

These vans have intake manifold gasket problems. Regardless of mileage, the rate of them blowing is high.

The average shop cost (due to so much labor involved) is in the $600+ range.

Revised gasket kits became available in the spring of '03.

Transmission harsh shifting is another sometimes problem.

The rocker panels are usually the first to rust through.

Power sliding doors are sometimes problematic as well, although I never had a door fault when I had my 2000 Silo.

One thing for sure though is have a qualified tech give the prospect van a thorough inspection before buying.

Good info. Thank you. I'll be sure to check to see if the manifold issue was addressed and check the other areas you mention. I did plan on having a mechanic look at it as well. Anyone else have things to add? If not, seems these are pretty good vehicles.

Re: Typical problems/issues?

As far as the big ticket items, the above post covers it. The first thing to know is, how many miles are on it? If high, in the 100k+ range, then the manifold gaskets should have been changed at least once. Make sure the transmission fluid AND filter have been changed at least once. Also, make sure the A/C is working properly if you need A/C. These vans have a tendency to crack the condensors. Not a difficult job but it can get expensive.
