87 Cavalier doesn't want to start.

Hello.

I am having trouble with my cavalier. The day before yesterday I was leaving work when my car sputtered, the check engine light flashed a few times, then died out. I got a ride home, then the next day I went back and check the battery, the fuses and all the standard stuff. I don't know what i did but just before I was about to say fuck it and give up I tried starting it once more and it started. I got it home and let sit in the drive way for about half hour. then I went out to go put some gas in it and when I started to back out the same problem happened. it sputtered then died out.

The funny thing is, though, that the check engine light does not come on when I turn the key on. all the other lights come on but not that one. I could usually hear the fuel pump engage when I would turn the key on but not anymore. also it does turn over and there is enough gas in there for it to start as well.

I really appreciate any help, this is driving my crazy.

Thanks.

if you dont hear the fuel pump when the key is turned to on that is most likely the problem. check the fuses and the relay first. then whack the tank with a rubber mallet, sometimes they will stick and by whacking the tank u can free them up. only a temp fix though
