03 trunk release problem

My sister has an 03 regal and it was parked over night with the trunk not latched all the way. Now the keyfob will not open the trunk. The strange thing is that the keyfob will still activate the trunk latch but only if the trunk is already at least open 1 foot high. As soon as you close it the fob does nothing. I listened in the trunk and you hear nothing. The same thing occurs with the glove box button. I tried the button in the glove compartment and that is also does nothing but you do hear a relay click under the dash. If the trunk is open the button works fine. Is there a contact out of whack that tells if the trunk is closed I should be looking for?

Re: 03 trunk release problem

There is a sensor to warn of the trunk being open or ajar but it should not cause this issue. Check the electrical connector and wiring to the trunk release solenoid. Maybe the solenoid is weak or something binding in the latch assembly.
