odometer not working

I have a 91 Lebaron, 3.0 V6, automatic, with a non-digital speedometer/odometer. The speedo works but the odometer and tripodometer recently stopped working completely. I bought the car used 3 years ago and the speedometer always read about 10 MPH faster than actual speed. I read posts about the speed/distance sensor and have located it on my car. If this sensor was bad, will the speedo still work? If it is not the sensor, what else could it be?

Re: odometer not working

I pulled the speed sensor near the cv joint and it made my speedometer 10 miles per hour off, still looking for the solution.
I think the body computer on the passenger side wall under the glovebox controls the speedoometer.

Re: odometer not working

Also too having bigger or smaller tires than factory can make the speedometer off by about 10 mph.

Re: odometer not working

The odometer problem sounds like the internal part of the guage cluster is broken. As for the speed, the first thing you should do is match your tire size to the listed tire sizes on the sticker in the driver's door jamb (assuming you still have it). If it matches one of them, go to someone with a good scan tool, they will be able to tell you which tire size your car's computer is set to. And no, the body computer does not receive the speedometer input at all, the engine computer does, and thus it is available by the serial bus. In fact, with a scan tool, you should be able to read the exact speed the car is going, and compare it to the reading on the cluster.

Irregardless, since your cluster is probably broken, might consider grabbing one from a junk yard first. Hey if you happen to find a 93 LeBaron coupe/convertible with a digital dash cluster and a 3.0L engine while you're there, pick up the cluster and all 3 computers from the car for me? It'd be a rare find, but I really want my digital dash cluster to work.

Re: odometer not working

I have an 88 Lebaron convertible and just went thru the same deal with the odometer and trip not working, bought 2 different cluster from the salvage yards and had the same problem, finally pulled the speedo out of my cluster and took it apart and found a small gear about 3/8" dia had missing teeth so I took one of the other speedos out and found the same thing, the gear is 3/8" dia and has a 20 tooth count was used by chrysler and ford, there's a person on ebay selling these gears for 13.00 plus 2.00 shipping or a site called speedometergears.com and he gets 28.00 for his.
on ebay look it up under Lebaron odometer gear. I purchased one from both places and it fixed both clusters I have, my original and now I have a spare. hope this helps.
