2001 protege battery light on.

Hi.
My 2001 protege 2.0l is being weird, the battery light comes on at random, regardless of lights/ac/stereo being on. It could stay on for couple of hours, and then be off for a day or two, and vice verse. The belt is fine. The battery is new(maybe 2 month old) all of the connections are in place. The voltage output when the car is running at idle, is 14.3v, and doesn't really go up if i rev the engine. however for the few times i have checked it, the battery light would not go on.

any ideas?

Re: 2001 protege battery light on.

you might be having some alternator issues,,, it kinda sounds like the brushes may be intermitantly not making the contact they should, or even the alt's voltage regulator may be faulty.. might pull the unit and have a shop bench test it.. or take the vehicle down and have them do it..

can't seem to think of anything else that would cause that light to pop on and off..

maybe someone knows more then me. but hopefully that points you in a good direction.
