02 Eclipse GT Fuel gage inop.

I just purchased a 2002 Eclipse GT w/136,000 miles. This car is for my son and after buying the car we realized that the fuel gage is not working. I am not completely car ignorant but the newer cars with all the electronics are a bit out of my league. My question is...Where should I start to track the problem, is there a fuse that may be at fault or is there maybe an external sending unit? Any advice as to where to start is appreciated.
