Trailer wiring harness damaged
2007 GMC Ext Cab, 2500HD, 6L Gas, with 196,000 KM
The connector underneath the bumper is damaged and I am am wondering if I can remove the pins from the old one and apply to a new connector. Do they sell just the connector, or do I need to replace the harness, or maybe cut and splice. Does anyone know what the little blue wire hanging free of the connector is for? Appreciate any feed back at all. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Trailer wiring harness damaged
the wiring connector/pins/fasteners can be removed..there is a clip that sticks out holding them in place with a tool these can be separated from the damaged plastic body..
try a scrap yard/ ebay motors to get the parts ...first ..the dealership will have the complete wire harness set for this..... cost????????? |

Re: Trailer wiring harness damaged
Thanks for the reply J Cat...
I was at the dealer today and they do sell a replacement with pigtails, but I was trying to avoid splicing and this has to be spliced in. I guess I could “unpin” the new and the old one and apply the existing wires to the new connector but it is $124.00 for the connector with pigtails. I hate to think what the entire harness is worth! I think I will take your advice and try the scrap yard….thanks. Hey do you know what the extra blue wire with the cap on it is for. AllData has nothing on this?? |

Re: Trailer wiring harness damaged
I found my answer to the "extra wire" on another site and thought I would post it here just in case anybody else would like to know.
(Quote from other site) The Light Blue wire with a cap on it, next to the Wiring harness on the underside and its about 2’INS long. It is called a Centre High-Mounted Stop-lamp [CHMSL] Wire, which is tied next to the Wiring Harness for use with a Trailer, slide-in Camper or cap. (End Quote) In other words it is the "thrid" brake light. |
