02 Caravan 41TE Solenoid Leak

Brought vehicle into a clinic at the local Dodge dealership last week and was told the transmission solenoid pack is leaking. They recommended replacing the solenoid even though it is working fine. Why not replace the gasket? I bought a gasket from dealership for less than $2 but was given a quote for $206.77 for the solenoid pack so I decided to wait and get some advice from the experts here. There is a warning printed on the cover saying the pack is not servicable and that it may be necessary to recalibrate if removed. Since this is beneath the crankcase oil fill port and the solenoid is covered with black grease, I thought I would clean it up and watch it to see if it is oil spilled from above or a true transmission leak. There is nothing on the floor of the garage. Now that I have cleaned it I see that there are some torx screws on the face of the solenoid so maybe that is where it is leaking from and not the mating surface with the transmission. So my questions. Would there be any benefit to tightening the torx fasteners on the solenoid? What are the torque specs for the torx fasteners on this plate? My guess is that they are just lightly snug-less than 110 in. lbs. specified for the case bolts.

The service manual states that the TCM Quick Learn procedure is necessary if the solenoid is replaced. Is there anyway for a backyard mechanic to do this without investing in an expensive scan tool? If I am reinstalling the same solenoid would it be necessary to perform the Quick learn ie. if I replaced the gasket? Thanks.

you don't need to perform a quicklearn if you replace on only the solenoid pack..

If it's the same pack no need for the quick learn, otherwise, just drive it on the gentle side for a day especially if you feel any harsh shifts then get it on the highway and do a few speedy accelerations. Within a few days it will be back to normal. The TCM will make adjustments as you drive.

Here's a typical procedure: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Chrysler-...0700-quick.htm

just replace the gasket on, a gasket wont change anything, but if you really want to do the quick learn, might be able to get it done for little or nothing depending on the shop. I just replaced the whole transmission and had to get a different pack, smaller tranny shop did the QL for free
