bad MAP sensor?
I have an '01 cherokee that keeps giving me random misfire codes but only after it has warmed up and it's shut down and restarted. I have scanned it with my OBD II tool and here's the info:
Report Date: 4-21-2010 (9:44 AM) Vehicle Year: 2001 Vehicle Make: Jeep Vehicle Model: Cherokee Vehicle Engine Size: 4.0 Vehicle VIN: Vehicle License Plate: Vehicle Mileage: Stored: P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected Pending: P0300 Random Misfire Detected P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected MIL ON MisFire Monitor Complete Fuel System Monitor Complete Comprehensive Component Monitor Complete Catalyst Monitor Complete Heated Catalyst Monitor Not Supported Evaporative System Monitor Complete Secondary Air System Monitor Not Supported A/C System Refrigerant Monitor Not Supported Oxygen Sensor Monitor Complete Oxygen Sensor Heater Monitor Complete EGR System Monitor Not Supported DTC for which Freeze Frame was Stored P0303 Fuel System 1 Status Closed Loop Fuel System 2 Status Closed Loop Calculated LOAD Value 18.04 % Engine Coolant Temp 206.60 °F Short Term Fuel Trim - Bank 1 4.69 % Long Term Fuel Trim - Bank 1 -0.78 % Short Term Fuel Trim - Bank 2 5.47 % Long Term Fuel Trim - Bank 2 0.78 % Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure 0.00 inHg Engine RPM 0 rpm Vehicle Speed Sensor 15.53 mph Could this be a bad MAP sensor, what's with the 0 reading and the 0 RPM reading? Please help! |

Re: bad MAP sensor?
Probably not the MAP sensor. There is likely a conflict between you scanner and the vehicle. If the MAP was reading 0 while the engine was running it would have flagged a code for it. I would focus on cylinders 1 and 3 checking the basics.

Re: bad MAP sensor?
Search on "heat soak". It's a common problem for 2000+ XJs. There's a TSB on it that involved adding an insulator around the #3 injector.

Re: bad MAP sensor?
I saw that TSB and I wrapped all injectors with insulation. I also changed the crankshaft postion sensor, coil rail, throttle position sensor and cleaned the entire throttle body with carb cleaner. The funny thing is that I often get the random misfire code, and the MAP sensor reading is at 0 everytime. If it were the MAP or O2 sensors they should throw a code. Maybe it could still be vapor locking?? What do you think?
