Tranny problem

I have a 1989 Lincoln Continental and I lost third gear. If I wind tight in second and back out it will shift to OD. I have adjusted the TV cable and no help. Fluid looks and smells ok and there is no sliping. Third gear is just neutral. There was no warning of any kind. What should I look for? Mel
