'87 cherokee start stall problem

I have an '87 jeep cherokee that starts fine but if I drive it for 10-15 minutes the engine stops completely. It doesn't sputter or give any warning that this is going to happen but it happens every time without fail. I can't start it for approx an hour after this happens.

On the other hand, if i start it and just let it idle it will stay running for hours. This problem only happens when I start driving it.

I have already tried replacing the fuel pump, the ballist resistor, and the battery. Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

A lot of us would suspect the crank positon sensor first.

Aloha is correct!
My sons 89 used to do the same thing. After we replaced the crank sensor, we never had the problem again.

OK, I have an 87 Cherokee with this SAME problem! I've never heard of a crank sensor....any idea what one costs? and is it a big deal to replace?

well it costs around 50 - 80 bucks i just replaced mine an it seems to have done the trick..(thanks for the advice) its a lil hard to get at its around the top of the flywheel it took me around 1 - 2 hours to replace

Depending on your location it normally runs between 40-60 dollars.
It is frustrating to replace because of its location in the vehicle,

But if you look down the driver's side of the engine, on the bellhousing, you will see a sensor with 2 wires. That is it, It will connect to a connector near the fuel rail.

To replace you will need several long extension bars, a rag, jack stands or ramps. I raised the front of the jeep, removed the front drive shaft (4X4), lowered the transmission (do not remove), used the rag to cover the hole where the sensor is so the screws would not fall in the bellhousing and simply removed the screws and replaced.
If you have a Haynes it shows/explains how to do it.
