Now its just getting old
99 cavalier 2.2, 2 door...
first off low beams/ DRL do not function, high beams work fine. changed bulbs, changed drl mircoprocessor in fuse panle on dash still nothing... picked up a relay of a 98 cavalier at the wreckers went to install it but nowhere to install traced the wires from the lights to a little oval shaped part that i could not remove for some reason...any ideas? next: started out as a little clunk when i would turn the steering wheel (once every 1/4 turn) now it is going over bumps, when i start the car and if i jerk the car by gas, let go, gas, let go it just sounds awful...more ideas?? severe power loss too, got new air intake with k&n filter, running it on premium to clean out fuel lines....going to try plugs/wires/fuel filter next...besides all that any more ideas??? gauges are also malfunctioning....odometer goes haywire every now and then and the gas gauge hasn't worked properly in about 6 months |

Re: Now its just getting old
Light switch stalk sounds like the headlight problem.
I had a similar situation, no low beams, only high beams. replaced the switch 2 years ago, still works fine (less than $40.00 at AutoZone/Napa-slightly more if you have cruise control) The clunking is probably the lower ball joints, If it only makes the noise when going over bumps. If it does it constantly when engine is not under load (foot off gas and coasting), it's the CV shafts. The gauge problem is either a bad ground connection (hard to find), or more likely the dash cluster is not properly sitting in it's mating connector. Did you have the cluster out recently to replace bulbs? Performance (or lack of) could be a lot of different things. If you're not getting SES light, or trouble codes, it could be a plugged fuel filter, or bad coils or ignition modules. The other things that won't throw a light would be Fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump. Check your pressure to see if that's the problem. Gas gauge fuel level sensor is part of the Fuel pump assembly. You need to lower the tank to get at that, and it's a pricey item, >$250.00 for the pump assembly. Good luck.

Re: Now its just getting old
ok i figured the clunk out, it was just the intake bouncing off the strut tower,
i did a tune up the other day found corrosion on #4 wire on coil pack and also #1 plug was coated in oil, any ideas....also my downstream o2 sensor is gone so that may account for poor mileage but since i dont have 220 for the replacment i'll have to cope.......... also i was told maybe the headlights were bust due to a faulty relay but i cant figure out for the life of me where it is, as previously mentioned i went to pink n pull got one off a 98 but had nowhere to plug it in, any one know what it may look like or where to locate it??? |

Re: Now its just getting old
did you check the wiring behind left headlight ? quite possibly corroded /broken connections in the wiring cluster there. you will have to remove the crappy duct tape to get at it , right on ocassion goes bad also. maybe you`ll get lucky and not have to buy the switch like mike2004tct had too.

Re: Now its just getting old
I second the comment about the stalk for the headlight switch. It's actually a fairly common thing to have go bad. Additionally, I suggest NOT using premium gas. The Octane rating on it has nothing to do with how clean it is, so you're just wasting money by using it.

Re: Now its just getting old
ok..so i changed the multi function switch, changed all 4 bulbs, change micro processor in fuse panel and still have no low beams..thing is the drl come off and on every now and then. the other day going over bumps they come on and off..i've checked all the connections i can see, short of tearing the dash apart what else could it be??
i have yet to check the wiring on the bulbs, somthing tells me that may not be the problem |
