Can a str-4 neon take a 350z?

I was driving one day and saw a neon that was wanting to race me, and I started chuckling because I never thought it would have a chance.

To make the story short the neon had inches on me at the 120 mph mark. I didn't realize it but I had my A/C on full blast.

I kind of believe that I could of took him on the fact that I'm not an experienced racer which I could tell this guy did it everyday of the week.

I have the touring model which is about 400lbs heavier than the track model.

With perfect shifting I think the Z could take the neon anyday of the week.

I also believe that any compact sports car that has a turbo will give most sports car a run for their money.

Im replying to an old thread about how the two cars compare in the quater mile.

even thought the neon has a good fight. Neon is a joke and so are there owners.

you can slap a turbo on any Z and give any high end sports car a match.

Re: Can a str-4 neon take a 350z?

It could come down to a driver's race. The Z weighs a good bit more than an SRT-4, and only makes another 20hp or so at the wheels. Be careful with them.

The Neon makes 220 hp, weighs only 2970 lbs, but only has a 5 spd tranni.

I'm going to assume the Neon get's about 185hp to the ground.

The Z get's about 240hp to the ground (?).

So the Z has a better WHP to Mass ratio than the neon and has 6 spd manual (you've got a stick right man?).

Now as far as I know, having the A/C on "full blast" only means the compressor is on and the fan is on full. I don't believe the compressor works (or is worked) any harder or takes any more power. But having it on does take some power none the less.

If the A/C takes 20 hp, you'd still have the better WHP to Mass ratio in the Z. So I really think the Z should be quicker and faster than a stock srt-4 (all drivers being equal).

I've heard SRT-4 drivers claiming 210+ whp...even think I read it somewhere that they were underrated...

REALLY?

DAMN!

I've not personally driven one, but a friend of mine test drove them at different lots many times. He said they were quite fast. But I've also heard they break often.

So the trick is, keep racing no matter what, because when he breaks down you'll pass him for sure

Re: Can a str-4 neon take a 350z?

230HP from a FWD car . . . not bad. Now, if it were all wheel drive, then we would have to worry. Even dodge claims 5.8 seconds for 0-60 and ours sits around 5.4 (depends who's doing the testing--this one is from Car and Driver's website). Needless to say, I think we should be able to walk 'em.

I thought the srt-4 was AWD? I guess I'll have to look up some specs...

Re: Can a str-4 neon take a 350z?

The first SRT-4s were rated at 215hp, and made 223fwhp, according to Sport Compact Car. The newest ones have even more power, and an LSD for better traction.

Like I said, be careful with them.

Yeah, they actually don't have mufflers. Just cats for emissions. I don't know how Dodge managed to get away with that.

actually, a turbocharger sometimes can act as a better muffer than a muffler can. The linear sound waves hit the turbine and bounce back on themselves (reversing phase) destructivly phasing the wave.

That and it seems like NOTHING can get through the damn cats.

It sounds good to me though.

Re: Can a str-4 neon take a 350z?

i know it's not really my place to say anything here and i know the thread is pretty old, but i feel i must comment anyway.. IMO, they're ticking time bombs. from what i've read from the critics, they can blow quite easily (at 14 some odd psi i wouldn't doubt it) i like to take any chance i get to hate on srt 4's tho, so don't mind me

2004 SRT-4 generally puts 230whp out from the factory....not the crank. A decent driver in a stock SRT-4 can run around a 13.7 in the 1/4. I would say this is a damn beast, let alone it only cost $20,000 about $10,000 less than a Z, right. Z's definetly got the looks though.
