2003 Fan issues - I am clueless. Please help!

Hi. The engine fan in my 2003 MC SS doesn't seem to be working and the car is starting to overheat. The other fan, which I think is the A/C fan seems to be working okay. I know nothing about cars and before I take this to a mechanic, could someone tell me what might be the issue...I do not want to go somewhere and get totally ripped off. So it would be nice if I appear to know what I am talking about... when i take it to the mechanic.

Thanks a million for any help,
Susan

If indeed you have a cooling fan problem, and it is with primary cooling fan, you could have a blown fuse, a bad fan relay, a bad fan motor, broken wire or a PCM problem or a temp switch.

If the fan runs with the A/C on, it seems that the fan should be ok......we would need a schematic of your fans.....systems are different for different cars......there are low speed and high speed setups....on some, just the low speed fan comes on....if it alone can't lower the temp, then the second fan comes on also.......other systems, via relays, both fans are wired in series and run together at low speed.....if high speed is called for, then relays switch and the fans are wired in parallel, and spin faster.....

How high is the temp going on the gage? I don't think the fan runs until the temp reaches 220F......how is the coolant level?
