Question 1997 Skylark Horn Issue

I HAVE A 1997 SKYLARK THAT SEEMS TO HAVE A HORN PROBLEM. THERE IS NOT AN ALARM BUT THERE IS A KEYLESS ENTRY ON THIS CAR. BASICALLY AFTER THE CAR SITS FOR A WHILE THE HORN STARTS GOING OFF. IF YOU GO OUT AND TAP THE HORN IT GOES OFF, BUT IT STARTS AGAIN AFTER A SHORT TIME GOES BY. THE ONLY TIME IT DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAPPEN IS WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TILTED ALL THE WAY UP. I CAN'T STAND THE STEERING WHEEL IN THAT POSITION SO I EVENTUALLY JUST HAD TO TAKE THE FUSE OUT, BUT I MISS THE HORN, ESPECIALLY AFTER SOMEONE ALMOST BACKED IN TO ME THE OTHER DAY AND I COULDN'T EVEN HONK AT HIM. I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK THAT MAYBE SOMETHING IS EITHER SWELLING UP IN IT AND CAUSING THE CONTACT OR A WIRE OR SOMETHING IS GETTING PINCHED IN THE LOWER TILT POSITIONS. MY BROTHER IS SCARED TO CHECK IT FOR FEAR OF ACCIDENTLY DEPLOYING THE AIRBAG AND THE COSTS THAT WOULD INVOLVE. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME ISSUE OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS PROBLEM? I WOULD APPRECIATE A LITTLE HELP ON THIS ONE! THANK YOU...

Re: 1997 Skylark Horn Issue

Welcome to AF.

Based on what you are saying it sounds like you have a problem with the horn ground in the steering column. All that happens when you press the horn button is a ground is supplied to the horn relay. The other side of the horn relay coil is hot at all times. The problem is you will need to disable and remove the airbag assembly along with the steering wheel to do further inspection. The ground goes through a slip ring assembly to transfer the signal due to the rotation of the steering wheel. It is not a solid wiring connection.
