Just looking for a simple answer to what I hope is a simple question!
Car is a '97 Sunfire SE. Ran beautifully the whole 2 months I had it in my possession, before refusing to start after a quick run up to the store. Had a shop replace the fuel pump and filter, and in doing so, they of course disconnected my battery. They then claimed that the computer needed to be reprogrammed, and hence forth has led to one problem after another, escalating what was supposed to be a $150 job into nearly $1100 (it is still at the same shop, 23 days later, still waiting for parts), including theft codes being thrown, then the crankshaft sensor being intermittent, and the need for a new instrument panel cluster. My main question-- did they actually need to reprogram my car's computer after disconnecting the battery, and having only replaced a fuel pump and filter? Thanks guys!!! |

Re: computer reprogram neccessary?
It is my underatanding.......
IF the battery is disconnected ....when it's re-connected the puter will re-set it's self.....Howwever the pre-sets on you radio WILL have to be reset.. So yeah their jerkin ya around.. IF for some reason the puter has to be replaced....IT DOES HAVE TO BE FLASHED...which unfortunately can only be done by a dealer servicce dept $$$$$$$$$$$$

Well, fortunatley, they determined I didn't need a new computer (although they did try to tell me the best deal I was going to find was the rebuilt one they wanted to get me for $680...til I told them I could get one @ NAPA for $118 and to blow it out their a**. Suddenly, the computer begain communicating). T
The place has had my vehicle since Aug 15th, and it was after they tried to reprogram my car's computer that I suddenly needed a new crankshaft positioning sensor and a new instrument panel cluster (car doesn't have a BCM, otherwise would be a much much cheaper repair). Finding it extremely hard to believe that fuel pump, CPS and the IPC all went kaput at the same moment--- while the car was parked for 2 minutes after driving 6 blocks first thing in the morning, and I was sitting in it the entire time. From here on out--- I'm taking it to a dealership; probably would have gotten off much cheaper in the long run. Thank for your input, guys! |

Re: computer reprogram neccessary?
I wonder if they somehow inadvertently reconnected the battery in reverse.

Re: computer reprogram neccessary?
Is it me or do the Service Managers and TECHs at the GM Dealers...seem to have the IQ of a small soap dish..
I gotta thread goin on my power windows on my 02' Sunfire...Before I posted here I went to the dealer we bought the car from..Walked to the service desk..explained the problem...Service Manager didn't even hesitate...we would have to run a diagnostic on the vehicle...I'm like Hey it's just the drivers side power widow...everything else is runnin fine....Well he sez it's dealership policy...I say how much he sez $125.00..I sez but that will be excluded if the problem is the window only...When he said NO I tuned around and walked out... That would be similar to..... I have a burned out light bulb in the living room....OK we will have to rewire the whole house... While I am on a RANT here.....can some one tell me why(I checked this out) Window regulator 02' Sunfire w/pwr windows pt# 12344545(example)$200.00 Window regulator 00' Cavilear w/pwr windows pt# 12344545 $100.00 Same part # 100$ difference....Does that make sense ???????
