Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
I have a 1994 V8 t-bird and it is making a squeaking or grinding type sound. Here are some pics of the pulley, its to the left of the alternator and above the tensioner, whats the name of this pulley? Does anyone know how to fix or what is wrong?

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
thats the idler pulley it doesnt drive anything and would be VERY easy to replace. Before you do that though try some WD-40 on the bearing while the engine is running. That stuff works wonders!

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
It's an idler pulley, around 15 bucks at autozone. For that money you're better off just replacing it rather than screwing around with it.

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
Overl0ad is right, replace it. If there's a grinding sound coming from it the bearings are shot and no amount of lube is going to help for long. If you spray WD-40 on it you will spraying the belt also, which isn't a good thing to do. Belts are meant to grip, not slide.

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
Cold opens up the clearance while heat will expand it and make a tighter fit.

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
I tried the WD-40 and it worked, as soon as I sprayed it on there the noise went away. It was amazing. I made sure I didnt get it on the belt also.

Re: Pulley making squeaking/grinding sound
IM telling you that stuff is amazing. I had the same problem and I used the same treatment (however it was on the belt tensioner pulley) on it 3 weeks ago and the problem still hasnt come back! A lot of times some junk just gets in the bearing or in between two rotating surfaces and its not enough to cause a real problem btu it will make a noise. The WD-40 can get in there and get rid of it. However if it does come back rather soon (like within the next month) I would say just change the pulley cause that might mean there is further damage to the bearing but not enough to make anything bad happen for a REALLY long time.
