2002 headlight problems

I've seen some post about the mutifunction switch, but mine is a little bit different.

Got a call from my wife that the headlights/dash lights will not come back on, was driving and they went out. Drove to her work, check all the fuses, all where fine, if i started the car the drl would come on so i knew the lights were not bad.

Start to play around with the switch and all. still nothing, moved the steering wheel, and all of a sudden the dash lights came on but no headlights. pulled the lever for brights came on, then went off, hit the steering wheel.....all lights come on, took for a drive and stayed on fine. came back moved steering wheel, light out again, move back up, dash light, hit steering wheel headlights again, but never can keep the brights on,

So there is a short/bad connection in the switch or the steering wheel. Anyone ever have this problem before? And ideas on what this might cost, be cool if just replacing the light switch/crusie lever will fix this,(hard to replace)but not sure. I can not get the lights to work when the steering wheel is at the lowest level(where wife likes it at) no matter how much hitting i do on the well. so is this the multifunction switch that is bad, or something in the steering assembly?

thanks in advance for any help!!
