95 neon fuel pump or wiring problem

my sister's 95 neon sport 2.0 OHC /auto.
car just stopped at deacceleration w/ cruise on.
first things checked: spark was good; fuel pump relays and fuses good; voltage found at 1 of 4 wires at pump; pump showed no signs of working properly until removed and jumped; after instillation of same pump, now works and car started; shutoff car and taped up harness securely at pump, now car won't start and smells hot at harness pump location

any help appreciated
