87 s-10 4x4 actuator

I have a 1987 s-10 blazer 4x4 went spotting last night and went to engage the 4 wheel drive it didn't seem to lock in I was wondering where the actuator was located so I could check it out.... it is not a push button type its the type that's on the floor. I was wondering it seemed to lock in when I was moving slow but when I had to gun it a little it seemed to disengage from 4 wheel drive.... I would appreciate any input anyone has thanks Mike....

Re: 87 s-10 4x4 actuator

I do not know where it is on the first gens, but I have a second gen '95 that keeps the actuator motor under the battery tray on the passenger side. It's bolted onto the front of the fender well and easy to get to once you remove the battery and tray. When transitioning to 4x4 modes, you can shift the transfer case on the fly to 4-hi, but take your foot off the gas. I will roll the truck, yank on the center console shifter knob and keep my foot off the gas. Within 3 seconds she locks in with a light click and the 4x4 light on the little diagram lights up. Then I stomp the gas and go.

Under the battery tray there is the vacuum thingy it has vac lines running to it and on the transfer case itself is the vac switch, its like a 15 dollar part but a pain in the ass to replace your self on your back.Check your vacuum lines from there to the battery tray.

yeah there is a large rubber boot under the battery tray and it usually wears out and cracks..thus being unable to engage 4x4

There's a good troubleshooting guide located here

I believe that they even tell you where everything is
