Interior lights / dome over ride button

On my 98 Yukon, if the dome over ride button is in the out position, the interior lights come on and stay on, regardless if a door is open or not, instead of the interior lights only coming on when a door is open.

My first guesses are that either the over-ride button switch on the dash could be bad, or, one of the door closed sensing buttons could be bad, making it appear that a door is always open.

Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, how did you troubleshoot it, and what did you determine was the problem?

This vehicle is a recent acquisition, and I don't have much history on it, so I don't know when or how this problem started.

Thanks
Mad Finn

Are you sure they don't go out eventually? Try it again and wait a few minutes to see if they go out.

The interior lights should come on when the doors are opened, the key is turned to off, the key is taken out, etc, etc....

Nope, they never go out. If the Dome Overide button is out, the lights stay on, no matter if the engine has been turned on, the doors are closed, nada, they stay on.

I also have a Suburban, with the same light setup/dome override button, so I'm familar with how they should work.

Most likely situation is that the drivers door (because it is opened/closed more than the others) switch has failed. Mine went bad in my '99 Yukon. You can reach under the dash or thru the fuse block door on the side of the dash and push in the little keepers (one on top, one on bottom) on the door switch to remove it by pulling it out. Unplug the switch and the interior light will go out if that is the faulty switch.

It is only about an $8.00 item at your local dealer.

Good Luck!
