BAH Help!!!

Ok guys, I've brought my baby back home to work on and hopefully get running.

While at work it recieved:

New Cap
New Rotor
New Plugs
New Wires
New Ignition Control Module
New Coil
New Fuel Pump
New Fuel Strainer
New Fuel Relay
NewUSed fuel pump relay connector

She turns over, trys to fire up but won't stay running, and backfires through the intake, you can hear it and feel it, it makes me cry.

What would be causing it to backfire through the intake?

I'm jacking it up tomorrow and checking out the fuel filter again, might aswell buy a new one and throw it in for the hell of it, but it won't solve the backfiring issue.

I took the harmonic balancer off, and the water pump to check if the timing chain was still intact, yes it was, so I threw it back together, pinched the water pump gasket in the process so I'm going to have to redo anyways, but would the back firing be from slip in the timing chain?

I noticed aswell, the harmonic balancer has 2 notchs, wtf? I thought they only had one? Is there an incorrect and correct one, or is there only one way, from what I figure in my head, there can only be one way as TDC on #1 is only on one notch.

At the shop we had good pressure from the fuel rail, now we got mediocre, thats why I'm going to be changing out the fuel filter, see if that helps which it probably will a little.

There is over 10L of gasoline in it but its parked on a slant, dad still thinks its enough to get the thing running but I might throw another 10L in just to make sure.

I'm going to assume we have spark as it is starting up, just running really really rough, then it dies within 2-3 seconds or so, even at full throttle.

Plug wires are in correct order, checked multiple times.

Anyone got any opinions? I either want this thing running to sell, or running and happy, so I can drive it.

THANKS!

Update is today I bought a new Fuel Filter and Water Pump Gasket, my Timing chain cover gasket will be in tomorrow which is perfect cause I think the rain is supposed to stop tomorrow so I can get back to working on it all.

Timing will make it backfire through the intake...sounds like the distributor might be 180 out.
Harmonic balancer should only have 1 timing notch in it..sounds like maybe the outer ring slipped and someone put another notch in it to compensate for the slippage...it may have really slipped out of wack now.
Pull your #1 plug and rotate the engine by hand with a finger over the plug hole. When it starts to blow air out of the plug hole you are coming up on TDC, when it stops you are at #1 TDC. See which timing notch (if any) is pointing at 0 or damn near it. Now pull your distributor cap and see if the rotor is point to where the #1 terminal post should be.

Re: BAH Help!!!

Morley when we first reinstalled all the new distributor components we did exactly that, I will go out again tonight and do it once I get back but I think that is set right. I will update in a few hours.

Re: BAH Help!!!

Oh also forgot to mention.

New timing chain cover gasket if I go in there again
New water pump gasket
and new Fuel Filter, which I will install before or just after I do the timing check again.

Re: BAH Help!!!

Ok, timing is set right on the distributor with TDC and the timing mark and such, so that isn't it. My next guess would be the timing chain jumped, anyone else got a good guess or something else for me to check?

Fucking lost 2 screwdriver bits, buncha blood, and more of my ego, time to get this thing running before I run out of ego

Re: BAH Help!!!

Just for the shits n giggles of it, what color is the spark? Nice and blue?

Tried starting it while a second hand turns the distributor slowly?

What year and motor are we talking about here?

Re: BAH Help!!!

Sorry I don't look at the spark while its going off in my hands but it was there when I had my spark plug tester home from school.

Yes We've tried messing with the distributor while trying to run it.

Re: BAH Help!!!

Ok little update, did compression checks and found out all the cylinders are there, so it isnt a dropped valve.

But the plugs are all oily, and they are basically new so either valve seals or rings are leaking, aka engine rebuild time
